Liquidmetal has been around for a while now, but no one has really figured out how to put the metal alloy that’s quite difficult to manufacture to use. But that might all change now since it’s rumored that Apple might have figured out how and are testing it on future iPhone versions.
According to a new patent that Electronista found, Apple could be the first to bring manufacture the metal alloy for smartphone use.
The alloy is quite easy to make since it requires absolutely no cooling, but the tricky part is controlling the thickness of it in large sheets. Even though it’s a stronger alternative to plastic, while also being a flexible alternative to metal, the metal alloy doesn’t quite fit into any of today’s methods of manufacturing.
If used in today’s manufacturing methods by stretching and molding the Liquidmetal sheets will simply snap them into two. Apple’s patent will try to uncover the various production methods to create large sheets of “metallic glass” with a thickness between 0.1mm-25mm. It’s also said that the patent clearly states that Apple wants to produce their iPhone, iPads and more with Liquidmetal.
